The VIP project, already completed, has made an important contribution for the research and the professional fields. The main result of this project is the development of the only open-source system of its characteristics to date. This system is a technological benchmark for the future, as it offers interpreters a complete solution that covers their technological needs with simple tools, useful functionalities, and a high degree of integration between those tools.

In the final phases of the project, the system was tested by interpreters. Although the results were favourable, areas for improvement have been identified in order to achieve an optimum level of performance that will lead to a higher degree of interpreter’s satisfaction. This project focuses on the integration of the Spanish-French language pair into the tools of the first module of VIP (the integrated corpus management module). As a result of the actions to be carried out for the integration of French, optimisations and improvements of the system’s tools will be also implemented.

Interpretation

Interpreting is an arduous and extremely stressful task, which requires a lot of effort in terms of decoding, memorising and encoding a message. Therefore, interpreters should be able to benefit from the technological advances, like translators and other language professionals, in order to significantly improve their working conditions. However, technological developments are hardly having an impact in this sector, where traditional and manual methods still predominate.

New resources

Unlike translators, who have a wide range of resources and Computer-assisted tools at their disposal, interpreters still have not benefited from the same level of automation or innovation. Fortunately, there is a growing interest in the implementation of such tools for interpreters, although the number of these technology tools is still very low and they do not meet all interpreters needs.

Objective

The goal of the VIP project is to revolutionise the interpreting industry by creating a set of tools for interpreters which has a similar impact to that of language technologies in translation. To this end, we intend to (a) identify the real needs of interpreters as well as the possible automation level, (b) inventory and analyse the existing assisted interpreting technologies, and (c) develop the first integrated system to enhance the interpreter work productivity (professional, trainers and trainees) before, during and after the interpretation.
